Poliomyelitis Causative agent →poliovirus (serotype 1,2&3) P1→ Mcc of epidemics P2 → most antigenic and most easily eradicable P 3 → MCC of VAPP (vaccine associated paralytic poliomyelitis) Reservoir: Man (No chronic carrier ) Mc clinical occurrence : sub clinical case Infectious material : feaces & oro-pharyngeal Secretions Period of communicability: 7-10 days before and after onset of symptom Incubation period : 3 to 35 days Clinical Presentation  ⇒ HISTORY OF FEVER AT ONSET OF PARALYSIS is suggestive of polio ⇒ There is NO SENSORY LOSS in polio. Diagnosis 1. Stool examination - Reverse cold chain in red box. virus can be found in feces from Onset to upto 8 weeks after paralysis with max. probability in first 2 weeks. 2. CSF examinations 3. Throat examination 4. Blood examination
